Georg Carstensen opened Tivoli Gardens on Vesterbrogade in 1843 with a single promise to King Christian VIII: give the people entertainment, and they will forget politics.
A century and eight decades later, his 20-acre pleasure garden remains Europe's second-oldest operating amusement park, and each November it transforms into Copenhagen's most celebrated Christmas market. The tradition began in 1994 when Tivoli's management installed Denmark's first dedicated julemarked, threading 55,000 fairy lights through the Chinese Pagoda and across the Pantomime Theatre's colonnade. Today the market runs from mid-November through early January, drawing 800,000 visitors who come for æbleskiver pancakes, glögg brewed with cinnamon and star anise, and handblown glass ornaments sold by artisans from Aarhus and Odense.
Tivoli's winter programme preserves the park's original architectural fabric while layering in Nordic yuletide rituals. The Moorish Palace, designed by Vilhelm Dahlerup in 1843, anchors the eastern perimeter with its horseshoe arches and turquoise domes; during December its façade is illuminated with LED projections depicting scenes from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. The Concert Hall, built in 1956 with a seashell-inspired roof, hosts nightly performances of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. Market stalls occupy the main promenade between the Nimb Hotel and the Garden, selling røget pølse sausages, risalamande rice pudding, and smoked salmon from Bornholm fisheries. Copenhagen Christmas market tickets grant access to the entire 20-acre site, though individual rides and exhibits carry separate charges unless bundled with an unlimited ride pass.
The park's seasonal calendar reflects Denmark's Lutheran liturgical traditions: Advent wreaths are lit at 5pm each Sunday, and the Tivoli Boys Guard performs December parades in red tunics modelled on the Royal Life Guards' ceremonial dress. The Christmas market ticket also admits visitors to Tivoli's permanent attractions, including the 1914 wooden Rutschebanen roller coaster and the Star Flyer tower, which at 80 metres offers sight lines across Strøget shopping street and Christiansborg Palace. Weekday afternoons between 11am and 4pm see the lightest foot traffic, as evening hours draw families and corporate groups attending the park's New Year's Eve fireworks. Tivoli closes its gates at 10pm Sunday through Thursday, extending to midnight Friday and Saturday when the outdoor stage hosts Nordic folk ensembles and the market's beer tents remain open until last call.
